Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Ensuring electrical appliances are safe is essential for businesses across the UK. Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) plays a vital role in promoting workplace safety and meeting regulatory compliance standards.

Our Story

What is Portable Appliance Testing?

Portable Appliance Testing (PAT) is the process of inspecting and testing electrical devices to ensure safety. It combines visual checks and electronic tests to detect hazards before they cause harm. Required under the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989, PAT helps businesses meet legal obligations while protecting employees and clients. Key checks include visual inspection, earth continuity, insulation resistance, polarity testing, and proper documentation for compliance and safety assurance.

Understanding Portable Appliance Testing (PAT)

Visual Inspection

The most critical initial assessment. Checks for cable damage, casing integrity, and plug condition. Often identifies the majority of faults.

Earth Bond Test

For Class I appliances with an earth pin. Measures resistance of the protective earth path. Ensures a safe path for fault current.

Insulation Resistance Test

Checks the integrity of an appliance's insulation. Applies a high voltage to detect current leakage. Identifies potential hidden insulation faults.
